How to Choose Window Treatments

When you consider the style and colors for your home, you know the most important thing can be your window treatments. Windows serve as a direct source of light for your home. Windows are like the eyes of your home. You can look out and others can look in. The amount of light can also dramatically affect your home, and sometimes you want to control how much light comes in. There are a variety of options available including mini blinds, vertical blinds, shutters, window coverings, plantation shutters, roller shades, pleated shades, cellular shades, curtains, draperies, and more.

Choosing the right kind of window treatment for your home can get very overwhelming and confusing. There is just so much to choose from! All the variety of window treatments that are available, you can be left with thousands of decisions to make. The most important consideration is how your window treatments will make you and your family feel.

Step 1:  Look at the current style and fashion of your home. What colors are predominant in each room? What is the color wall color, the furniture and the floor? Do you want to keep those colors?

Step 2:  Narrow down what kind of basic window treatment you want. Do you want curtains or shutters? If you’re dealing with a modern kitchen look, you may want to consider shutters instead of blinds. If you’re getting window treatment for an office then blinds may be more suitable than curtains. If you’re dealing with a bedroom or guest room, then drapes may be more suitable than blinds.

Drapes and curtains are more traditional looks in window treatments. Drapes hang from a traverse rod and usually use a cord to open and close them. They are usually lined and are made from heavier fabric. Curtains are similar in that they hang from curtain rods, but are usually opened and closed by hand, and are made from lighter weight fabric and are not lined.

Shades have also been around for a long time, although today there are many different styles than the traditional roll-up shade we might have grown up with.

Blinds have been around since Colonial times, but today there are more style choices than ever before. These window treatment choices are decorative as well as functional, and most have been around for a number of years.

There are other treatment styles that serve as decorative features, such as valances, swags, and window toppers.

Step 3:  Choose fabrics and colors.  There’s such a wide range of material, pattern and color options available.  Take the time to find something that matches your personal style.  Your window treatments should reflect the look of your home.  Are you more classic?  Traditional?  Eclectic?  Modern?  Sophisticated?

Don’t forget, there is no one right way to have your window treatment done. The only right way is the way that you are happiest with.  Whether your home is formal or casual, contemporary or traditional, there is a window treatment style to suit your tastes.
